Can a man and a giant crocodile be friends? The answer is... Yes. A Costa Rican man named Chito has had a giant crocodile as a pet or "friend" as he likes to call him for over 20 years. This giant croc may not be the biggest crocodile in the world, but it isn't far from it at 17 feet long and 980 lbs.
It all started when Chito found a skinny crocodile laying lifeless along a river bed after being shot in the eye by a local farmer. The farmer had claimed a giant alligator was attacking and eating his cattle. Chito dragged the large crocodile on a boat with the help of some friend and took him to his house. Chito began to nurse it back to health with medical care, food and affection. "Pocho" which means strength, was the name given to the big crocodile which only weight 150 lbs at the time.
The croc monster Pocho was given medicine, chicken and fish as it took nearly 6 months for him to fully recover. Since then, Pocho, the giant creature, grew to be almost 1,000 lbs and became more and more comfortable playing with his savior Chito. For 10 years,
Chito and Pocho performed at a local amusement park putting on shows for tourists who flew in from all over the world to see this unique creature. While the giant alligator never attacked or hurt Chito, it still wasn't safe for anyone else to venture into the water with the beast. Pocho would attack and kill any other human who attempted to get near him.
It was an amazing story that tragically came to and end in October of 2011 when Pocho the crocodile died. Pocho was estimated to be 50 years old, about the same age as his owner Chito.
