The world’s largest and longest-running release of captive bred cranes is at Mississippi Sandhill Crane Refuge, http://go.usa.gov/5BP which was created to conserve the endangered sandhill crane subspecies and its equally rare habitat. This November biologists released 18 young cranes on the MS Gulf Coast refuge. The program began in 1981 and has helped boost the cranes’ numbers from 30-35 birds in the 1970s to about 110 today. The refuge holds guided crane-watching auto tours on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Photo: USFWS
