Whooping Crane Following Ultra Light

The ultralight-led migration of nine young whooping cranes was on hold in Alabama, but has now been given a green light to proceed. Learn more http://go.usa.gov/RXp Photo of ultralight flyover in 2010, by Keith Ramos.

Three young whooping cranes have begun an ultralight-led migration from WI to wintering grounds on FL’s St. Marks and Chassahowitzka Refuges. They are the 11th generation of whooping cranes in Operation Migration, a bold program to reintroduce the endangered birds to eastern North America. This photo shows one of the last flight training sessions before the young birds left on Oct. 8. Learn about the program and find a link to a webcam where you can watch the journey live: http://1.usa.gov/qPUhg0 Photo: Douglas Pellerin, Operation Migration
