Crocodile mom releases baby from egg

At the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park a Siamese crocodile releases a baby from the egg.

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2008) — For the first time, researchers have shown that the pre-hatching calls of baby Nile crocodiles actually mean something to their siblings and to their mothers. The calls--which are perfectly audible to humans and sound like "umph! umph! umph!"--tell the others in the nest that it's time to hatch, according to the report in the June 23rd issue of Current Biology. Those cries also tell the mother croc to start digging up the nest.

Mum Crocs carry their babies from the nest to water, safely in their mouths, where they release them in the shallows to hide in the reeds.  The mother croc lays close by to protect the babies from herons and other preditors.

Cinderella Crocodile
"From the book "An Encyclopedia of Myth and Legend,
Pacific Mythology" by Jan Knappert."
This story is well known in Indonesia, usually as the tale of the two (step) sisters. In Halmahera, Cinderella is called Damura. Her stepmother tells her to go and wash clothes in the river. She loses one garment, so she has to go and find it. She meets a mother crocodile whom she greets politely, so the crocodile vows not eat her, but agrees to look for the lost garment on the river bed. Meanwhile, Damura has to look after the baby crocodile. She does so, singing a nice song to the young reptile. The crocodile finds her garment and comes back with it, then says to Damura, "Open your mouth!"
She does and the crocodile puts something in her mouth saying, "Speak to nobody on the road!"
When Damura comes home and says, "Hello, Daddy!" Two golden coins fall out of her mouth. Of course then her stepsister has to visit the same crocodile. She "loses" a garment and finds the crocodile, but when she has to hold its baby, she sings a wicked little song: "Little reptile, you stink!"
When she comes home only stones fall out of her mouth. After this the king invites everyone to a feast, but Damura has to stay home. She then goes to the crocodile, who gives her a sarong and jacket of golden silk, and golden sandals. At the feast the prince falls in love with her and when she has to run away at cockcrow, he catches hold of one of her sandals. The prince identifies Damura as the girl whom the sandal fits and marries her, but the stepmother throws her into the river. Fortunately the crocodile brings her to the surface and give

Rare Crane

The Red Crowned Crane is named for a patch of skin on its otherwise white head and body that is red and brightens when it is excited or angry. There are only 1,700 of these endangered birds left in the wild; much of its decline being due to habitat loss, such as wetlands drying up in Asia and fires in its breeding areas in Siberia. They are legally protected now in Russia, China and Japan and more work is being done to protect and conserve their habitat.

The beautiful crested ibis has white plumage with red or pink skin that shines through. Once plentiful throughout Asia, now only a few individuals are left, with estimates of between 50 and 250 living in the world. Listed as endangered, there is some good news as the Chinese and Japanese governments are taking measures to conserve and protect this special bird. Through protected areas and captive breeding programs, the population is slowly increasing overall. There is a small enclave of wild crested ibis in the Shanxi province in China, while Japan has reintroduced 10 birds to the wild with a goal of 60 by 2015.

Last Feast of the Crocodiles

In the daily struggle for survival, terrible thirst drives wildlife to water...even when the water is just inches away from the jaws of a crocodile. During one harsh season, a punishing drought draws some of Africa's most magnificent creatures to the shrinking pools of the Luvuvhu River. Its dwindling waters provide relief for baboons, impala, elephants, lions, water birds and bee-eaters - but also a refuge for scores of hungry crocodiles. Amidst the stunning scenes of nature at its harshest, strange things happen. A baby crocodile basks on top of a hippopotamus. Baboons attack a crocodile that has taken a youngster from the troop. Crocodiles harass a heron and steal its hard-won catch. And hippos calmly wade into the middle of a crocodile feeding frenzy. But the power of nature and her relentless drought may prove greater than even that of the most fearsome beasts. This cruel season may turn out to be the LAST FEAST OF THE CROCODILES.

Largest Saltwater Croc in History in Captivity

Lolong, a man-eating beast feared by locals, has set a Guinness Book of World Records mark as the world's largest saltwater crocodile in captivity.

The giant crocodile measures 20.24 feet, weighs more than a ton and was blamed for several deaths before its capture by officials in the southern Philippines town of Bunawan in September, 2011.

And while Lolong has brought some tourist dollars into the small town, its capture has also stirred fears that other giant killer crocs might be lurking in the local waters.

"There were mixed feelings," Bunawan Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde told the Associated Press. "We're really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone."

In fact, Elorde says he spotted an even larger crocodile escape when he and about 100 others combined their efforts to capture Lolong. It took a combination of ropes and cranes to bring in the giant crocodile, which was pursued after a child was killed in 2009 and a fisherman went missing. Lolong was named after an official who died of a heart attack after traveling to Bunawan to assist in the capture.

Since its capture, Lolong has become something of a tourist attraction and is the star of a new ecotourism and research center in the town. And while the park has brought in $72,000 in park fees since Lolong's debut, most of that money goes to feeding and taking care of the crocodile.

AS SEEN ON BUILT FOR THE KILL IV: CROCODILE
On our last game drive in the Masai Mara, Kenya we found a pride of lions fighting over a hippo carcass in the Mara River. Our guide, who had 20 years experience working on the Mara, had never seen anything like it before. He thought the lions would have been scared of the crocs. They weren't. There were 6 male lions and 4 female lions at the sighting while we were there. We would have stayed all day, but we had to catch a flight that afternoon! National Wildlife Refuge System

The world’s largest and longest-running release of captive bred cranes is at Mississippi Sandhill Crane Refuge, http://go.usa.gov/5BP which was created to conserve the endangered sandhill crane subspecies and its equally rare habitat. This November biologists released 18 young cranes on the MS Gulf Coast refuge. The program began in 1981 and has helped boost the cranes’ numbers from 30-35 birds in the 1970s to about 110 today.
